Peat Cot Centre
Location: Dartmoor, Devon
Our Involvement: Speculative design
Construction Method: Stone, timber frame, thatch
The Peat Cot centre is a speculative proposal for a rural arts and crafts centre in Dartmoor National Park. The masterplan incorporates existing buildings from the previously agricultural site, and proposes a collection of new buildings to form a new ‘village.’
The main activity spaces incorporate a curved thatched roofscape that mimics the flow and materiality of the surrounding landscape, whilst surrounding timber-framed buildings create accommodation, facilities and amenities for residential courses and workshops.
The negative space between buildings form a main square for community events, and also offer glimpses out towards the moor. Steps between buildings lead people out into the landscape, views of which are captured by the main activity spaces.
